Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Women’s groups have long been active participants in political advocacy, particularly in areas of social and political change. In Jos North LGA, Plateau State, various women’s organizations are pivotal in promoting women’s rights, gender equality, and political participation. These groups have historically mobilized women to engage in political activities such as voting, running for office, and advocating for policies that address gender-specific issues (Adeyemo & Ayuba, 2024). However, the extent to which these groups influence women's political participation remains understudied, particularly in the context of local elections. This study aims to assess the role of women’s groups in Jos North LGA in encouraging political participation among women and how their advocacy efforts have contributed to women's inclusion in local governance.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the active involvement of women’s groups in political advocacy, women’s political participation in Jos North LGA remains relatively low, especially in terms of elected office-holding. While these groups engage in various activities to raise awareness and promote political engagement, their impact on increasing women's political representation at the local level is not fully understood. This study will assess the specific role of women’s advocacy organizations in influencing political participation and identify the challenges these groups face in mobilizing women to actively participate in local elections.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of women’s groups in promoting political participation among women in Jos North LGA.
  2. To evaluate the impact of women’s advocacy organizations on increasing women’s political representation in Jos North LGA.
  3. To identify the challenges faced by women’s groups in mobilizing women for political participation.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do women’s groups in Jos North LGA promote political participation among women?
  2. What impact have women’s advocacy organizations had on increasing women’s political representation in Jos North LGA?
  3. What challenges do women’s groups face in encouraging greater political participation among women in Jos North LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Women’s advocacy organizations have a significant positive impact on political participation among women in Jos North LGA.
  2. The activities of women’s groups contribute to increased women’s representation in local political offices in Jos North LGA.
  3. Women’s groups face challenges such as cultural barriers, limited resources, and political resistance in mobilizing women for political participation.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will shed light on the role of women’s groups in promoting political participation and advancing gender equality in Jos North LGA. It will provide valuable insights for policymakers, women's rights organizations, and other stakeholders working to enhance women’s representation and participation in politics.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on women's groups operating within Jos North LGA, Plateau State, and their influence on political participation. It will assess both local advocacy initiatives and the broader impact of these groups on women’s political engagement. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting by participants and the challenges of accessing comprehensive data on women’s political participation.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Women’s Groups: Organized groups of women aimed at advocating for women’s rights, empowerment, and political participation.
  2. Political Participation: The involvement of individuals in political activities, such as voting, running for office, or engaging in political advocacy.
  3. Advocacy Organizations: Groups dedicated to influencing public policy, promoting social change, and raising awareness about issues affecting specific groups, such as women.
